Showreel 2012

Showreel breakdown

Human body in realtime!

Recently I’ve really grown in modelling, texturing and shading. I think this shines through in the human project where I’ve worked on organic modeling and sculpting. A lot of the texturing and shading also shows here. For example we used a vertex manipulation shader together with the usual one to create “living organs”. This can be seen on the arteries (how they pulse with the heart) and the digestive system is also moving and “living”.

Big machines in realtime!

From the organic projects to the hardsurface projects. First we have the Sandvik demo which was a pitch to help them show their machines in a more exciting and inspiring way. What they were using before was a scale model which really didn’t represent the machines accurately. So we created the demo and landed the project with them. Unfourtunatley I cannot show the live project, but the demo will convey alot of how we were thinking and some of how the final product will look like.

The earth realtime!

Then we have the Expo projects, these were several different projects that all had the world expo in Shanghai in common. We introduced Sweden to the world in this realtime rendering of the world.

Paper in realtime!

SCA was also a project were the presentation really came out nice. It was alot of fun creating the menu system, its a simple design but those are often also the best. Creating the content was also very nice. Like the rolled up newspaper and the folding box. The most challenging was probably the intro, I was creating it for stereoscopic viewing and considering the big distances it took alittle time to get it just right. The fade over to the menu (the last part of the intro) is my favourite part, it just looks so nice.

Alot of my interactivity can be seen in the human project and the sca project. Creating a working presentation is always a challenge when creating the interactivity. There is always things the user does that you never expect as a developer. But that is also part of the challenge. My training together with the experience I’ve aqquired has been a great asset when designing and implementing the interactivity. I’ve also had good use of my webdesign skills when creating some of the menu systems and when creating the main flow through the presentations.

The overall showreel mainly consists of real-time projects, but there are some rendered projects.

Retrospelsmässan is one of the rendered projects, this was a fun and challenging project. Creating that many falling “pixels” was actually a lot harder than I first anticipated. But in the end it came out great and I’m very pleased with the final trailer. The client was also very satisfied and actually had it running the whole event.

The Zoega project is acctually from my time at Bobby in Gothenburg but I was asked to not show it at first (It needed to be shown on TV first). So I included it now instead. The Butterfly was really fun to create and rigg. It was my first insect rigg and i’m acctually really proud of it. Creating a rigg can always be difficult but this rigg came out versatile and solid. The animator acctually approved the rigging and after starting to animate he realized that the rigg needed tweaking which was no trouble at all.

The projects have all been a challenge in its own and all of them have been great experiences for me. The real thing to take with me from all of these experiences is the way to work with realtime projects. Realtime projects are not much different from the creation of a game. The process from start to finish has been very similar, although the tools are completely different the end product is really just a game with simple mechanics.

All the presentations also work in stereoscopic and some even in alioscopy (glasses free 3D). It’s always complex to get the stereoscopic picture right when working with a realtime application, you never know where the user might look.

Well that’s my showreel for this year I hope you like it and if you would like regular updates from me in the future please subscribe to my newsletter
